In kindergarten we learn about the changes that happen around us in the world. One example we use to study this is the change that a butterfly undergoes from an egg to a caterpillar to a butterfly.

Standard: Knowing and Using Arts Materials and Resources
Students will be knowledgeable about and make use of the materials and resources available for participation in the arts in various roles.
  • Students understand the characteristics of various mediums (two-dimensional, three dimensional, electronic images) in order to select those that are appropriate for their purposes and intent (a).

  • Assessment Plan:

    Students will be assessed based upon the outcome of their projects. A rubric would be established detailing what should be included in each life phase to show understanding.

    Teacher Directions:

    Teachers will encourage students to use materials in unique ways to create an egg, a caterpillar, and a butterfly.

    Student Directions:

    Students will be given a variety of art materials and encouraged to use them to create each of the three major phases of the butterfly's life cycle.


    Resources/Materials Needed:

    Books with pictures of the butterfly's phases of life. A variety of art materials - paper, scissors, glue, tape, magazines, pom-poms, pipe cleaners, etc.

    Time Required:

    2 sessions of 30 minutes

    Reflection:

    I have used this lesson with my kindergardeners and it is very effective. I would do it with a small group while the other students were exploring different ways to show understanding of the concept.
